Principal's Corner
Greetings SBM Family!
I hope this message finds you well-rested and re-energized after a refreshing Fall Break and an exciting State Fair Day! These moments of relaxation and fun are vital for recharging our batteries, and I trust they’ve given you the opportunity to reconnect with loved ones and enjoy some well-deserved downtime.
As we transition back into the school routine, I encourage everyone to refocus on the goals we’ve set for this year. Our school-wide theme of "Leveling Up" remains at the forefront of everything we do, and now is the time to bring renewed energy and focus to the classroom and beyond.
Executives, I know balancing school work with extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, and personal time can be challenging. But remember, it’s all about finding the right balance and maintaining discipline. Stay organized, manage your time wisely, and don't hesitate to reach out to your teachers, counselors or administrators if you need support. We are here to help you succeed academically while nurturing your well-being.
To our dedicated staff, thank you for your continued commitment to our executives' growth and success. Your hard work, passion, and dedication do not go unnoticed, and I am incredibly grateful for the impact you make every day. Let’s continue working together to provide our students with an exceptional learning environment that promotes both academic achievement and personal growth.
Families, your support is invaluable in this journey. Whether it's helping with homework, cheering on your student’s extracurricular activities, or simply providing encouragement, your involvement plays a key role in their success. Let’s continue to partner together to ensure that our students have everything they need to thrive and exceed their academic potential.
As we continue through this semester, let’s stay focused, maintain balance, and continue to "Level Up" in every area of our lives.
Welcome back, and let’s make the rest of the semester our best one yet!
Educationally Yours,
Principal West
Mrs. Angela West
Mrs. Angela West was born in a family of educators in Natchez, MS, where she graduated from high school. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology Degree from Xavier University, an HBCU, and a Master of Science in Public Health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, both in New Orleans, LA. After moving to Dallas and teaching for several years, she obtained her Master's Degree in Educational Leadership at the University of North Texas in Dallas in 2008
Angela West began her educational career in the Dallas Independent School District in 1996 as a Biology teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School. Mrs. West spent 10 years teaching within the district as a Science teacher at both Woodrow Wilson High School and North Dallas High School, where she was Teacher of the Year in 2006, before being accepted into the UNT Pilot High School Leadership Program (Cohort 2) - a partnership with the Dallas Independent School District and the University of North Texas in Dallas.
While in the program, Mrs. West served as an Assistant Principal Intern/School Improvement Facilitator at W.W. Samuell High School for nearly a year, and was hired as an Assistant Principal, then soon after, the Dean of Instruction at Seagoville High School. Mrs. West served in this capacity for two years, and the work that she and her team led afforded the school the opportunity to move from an Academically Unacceptable Rating to an Academically Acceptable Rating in those two years.
Mrs. West began her principalship as the Principal at the Dallas Environmental Science Academy in the Dallas Independent School District in 2010. The campus earned Blue Ribbon Recognition in 2011 and carried the distinction for five consecutive years. In 2014, Mrs. West accepted the principalship at Raul Quintanilla, Sr., Middle School in the Dallas Independent School District and served for one year. Under Mrs. West's leadership, the campus moved from a "C" Rating to a "B" Rating. It earned six distinctions in Math, Science, Social Studies, Top 25% Student Progress, Top 25% Closing Performance Gaps, and Postsecondary Readiness.
In 2015, Mrs. West returned to Seagoville High School as the building principal, where they pioneered the first P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) in Texas and moved the campus from a "D" Rating to a "C" Rating. In 2017, she was the Feeder Principal of the Year and the Network Principal of the Year in 2018. While under her leadership, Seagoville High School earned distinctions in Science, Social Studies, and Comparative Academic Growth. Mrs. West proudly led Skyline Career Development Center, the Nation's First Magnet School and Dallas ISD's largest campus serving approximately 4,000 students and 425 staff members for two years. Among many accomplishments this year, Mrs. West is extremely proud of graduating Skyline's first ECHS cohort and 90% of the 2023 senior class earning a CCMR point. Last year, Mrs. West was named the Skyline Vertical Team Secondary Principal of the Year.
Mrs. West is passionate about learning and leading with excellence and equity in mind, building positive relationships that foster continuous growth, and supporting campus leaders, teachers, staff, and students so that they can exceed their potential. She believes in the power of a "village" and grounds her work in bridging connections among school, home, and the community.
Mrs. West desires to create a long-lasting impact within the Dallas Independent School District, where she has served for 26 years - equipping students, teachers, campus leaders, and learning communities to combat poverty through education, achievement, empowerment, and character.
